When most people think of the perfect time for beach portraits, they imagine the soft, golden light just before sunset. While I absolutely love photographing during golden hour, sometimes schedules don’t line up—and that’s perfectly okay! This beautiful couple’s session at Mission Beach and Mission Bay is proof that gorgeous portraits can be created at any time of day.

For this session, we had to schedule it mid-day, when the sun was high in the sky. Normally, I avoid photographing during this time because the bright overhead sun can create harsh shadows and make people squint. But photography is all about adapting, finding beautiful light, and making the most of every location. I’m so happy we embraced the challenge because I absolutely love how these images turned out.

The bright California sunshine brought out the rich blues of the ocean and bay, the warm tones of the sand, and the colorful atmosphere that makes Mission Beach such an iconic San Diego destination. The vibrant daylight gave these photos an energetic, joyful feel that perfectly matched this fun-loving couple.

One of my favorite things about photographing at Mission Beach is the incredible variety of scenery within walking distance. We started along the sandy shoreline, capturing timeless beach portraits with the Pacific Ocean as our backdrop. Then we explored Mission Bay, where the calmer water created a completely different look and feel. Finally, we wandered along the lively Mission Beach Boardwalk, adding a playful, coastal vibe to their gallery.

Having multiple backdrops in one session allows couples to enjoy a diverse collection of images without having to travel between locations. From the beach to the bay to the boardwalk, every stop offers something unique.

Of course, the best part of the session wasn’t the location—it was this wonderful couple. They were incredibly sweet, relaxed, and so much fun to photograph. Their genuine laughter and connection made every image feel natural and authentic. Those are always my favorite moments to capture.
