Movement Matters: Why Play Makes Family Photos More Meaningful

When you have little children, getting everyone to stand still and smile at the camera can feel like a challenge. But here’s the good news:

They don’t have to!

In my family portrait sessions, movement is a big part of how I help children relax, have fun, and genuinely enjoy being photographed.

Let Them Move

Kids are happiest when they’re moving. So instead of constantly asking them to stand still, I give them opportunities to run, jump, play, and interact with their parents.

Maybe Mom chases them around. Maybe Dad challenges them to a little race. Maybe we play peek-a-boo, have a jumping contest, or turn a simple walk into a game.

And there’s nothing quite like a dad giving his little one a big lift or a piggyback ride. Those are the moments kids remember.

Play Creates Real Connection

The goal isn't simply to get a smiling child looking at my camera.

I want to see your family being your family.

The giggles when Dad gives them a lift. The little arms wrapped around Mom. A child hiding behind a parent during peek-a-boo. Siblings running hand-in-hand. The spontaneous laughter that happens when everyone forgets the camera is even there.

These moments create photographs that feel alive.

Family Photos Don’t Have to Mean Everyone Looking at the Camera

Of course, I’ll always capture a few classic portraits where everyone is looking at the camera. Those photographs are important!

But they’re only part of your family's story.

When you look back at your photographs years from now, you may not remember exactly how everyone stood or smiled. What you’ll remember is how it felt to be together.

You’ll see the way your children reached for you, the way they climbed into Dad’s arms, the way you held them close, and the little touches that made your family yours.

Follow Your Family’s Natural Rhythm

Every family has their own way of playing together, and I love discovering it.

Sometimes I’ll introduce a little game or activity to get things started. Other times, I simply watch what naturally happens between you and encourage it.

If your children love to run, we run.

If Dad is the family's favorite jungle gym, we use it!

If your little one loves hiding behind Mom, we play peek-a-boo.

 

Those authentic interactions are often where the most beautiful photographs happen.

The Best Moments Are Sometimes the Ones You Didn’t Plan

My job isn't just to pose your family. It's to notice you.

I’m watching for the little moments—the laugh, the hug, the gentle touch, the look between a parent and child—that happen naturally when you're simply enjoying one another.

So come ready to play. Let your kids be kids. Chase them, tickle them, hold them close, give them piggyback rides, and love on them the way you always do.
